Thomas Rock - A View Worth Seeing
Thomas Rock is one of the few places I can honestly say I was pleasantly surprised when we arrived at the end of the trail and I saw the view. Located near Big Bay, Michigan, Thomas Rock lifts you above the surrounding area and gives you the opportunity to view not just Independence Lake and the small town of Big Bay, but also miles of forest and Lake Superior.
Once you arrive in the parking area, you'll find vault toilets, picnic tables and grills to enjoy those beautiful summer days. There is also an interpretive sign at the trail head that explains exactly what you'll be looking at when you reach the lookout. The trail is ADA accessible and is only about 1/2 a mile long so there's no reason to not stop and enjoy the view.
To get to Thomas Rock, you'll want to travel about 1.8 miles south on Country Road 550 to Country Road 510 from Big Bay. You're going to turn right onto Country Road 510 and go approximately 1 mile until you see a rock sign that says "Thomas Rock" on the right. Follow the driveway and you'll reach the trail head parking. The trail goes in a loop and will end back at the parking lot.
