Gilmore Car Museum

It’s no secret that I love cars so when I found out about this impressive car museum in the small town of Hickory Corners, Michigan, I had to check it out. I am so happy I did. Located on 90 acres, the museum consists of several buildings/barn with cars from all years and manufacturers.

Part of the charm of the museum is the fully-functional 1941 Silk City Diner and the recreated 1930s Shell Service Station. We haven’t had the opportunity to eat at the Silky City Diner but it’s always busy when we’re there. The Shell Service Station is pretty neat because you can go into it. It has all the tools a 1930s service garage would have as well as Shell memorabilia, gas pump globes and restrooms.

The real reason we visit Gilmore isn't because of it’s charm factor but rather because of the cars. Housed at the museum are cars from the Classic Car Club of America, Pierce-Arrow Museum, Franklin Collection, Cadillac-LaSalle Club Museum, Model A Ford Museum and Lincoln Motor Car Club Heritage.  Special exhibits are rotated in and out of the museum often so there is always something new to look at it. The last time we were there the main building had some of the most beautiful, elegant automobiles of the 1930s, including rare Dusenbergs, Packards and Rolls-Royce. At the same visit, there was also a section for American Legends from the 40s, 50s and 60s. This was probably my favourite special exhibit that I've ever seen at Gilmore.

In addition to the hundreds of cars available to visit year round, the museum also hosts numerous events throughout the Spring, Summer and Fall. My particular favourite is Mopars at the Red Barn. An entire gathering of just Mopars. This is one of the most impressive Michigan Mopar show that I have ever seen, including a handful of rare cars (the Hemi 71 ‘Cuda, a personal favourite). For a full listing of special events occurring at the museum, visit Gilmore Museum Events.
